Not only that, but it will also allow for wider engagement and understanding of your ideas- who doesn’t want that…? While it may seem trivial to take this step in some situations, I can assure you that at one point or another, someone in the room will thank you. A proper step in preventing or correcting this curse is to establish a common baseline understanding with those whom you communicate with. It is challenging to identify when we are guilty of this curse, but remaining conscious of its existence gives us a chance to avoid it. This results in a lapse of understanding, and therefore the inability to get others to buy-in to our ideas. So what is the Curse? The Curse of Knowledge is when we communicate an idea and wrongly assume that others have the same background information as we do. Something I am sure that we have all been guilty of at one point or another in our lives. Who is not interested to learn more about why Wendy’s tagline, “Where’s the Beef,” has been so catchy and successful, or how Subway discovered the key marketing story involving “Jared from Subway.” This book is a straightforward read that even provides some laughs along the way.įor a quick summary, the book highlights six aspects of a message that make it stick: Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional, and Stories. Not only are the concepts within this book highly valuable, but the authors utilize common messages that we are all aware of to highlight their findings. I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone reading this as it may be the most influential book for business, and life, that I have read thus far throughout my summer reading. Thankfully, this book provided actionable insights not only to achieve that goal, but so much more. I have become increasingly focused on how to tell engaging stories and how to increase the effectiveness and persuasiveness of my communication. So then what made me pick up this book? Storytelling. Since then, I thankfully have broadened my horizons, and have made it a focus to round-out my business toolkit. I found the insights we discussed in class intriguing, but since I was not pursuing a career in marketing, I thought the book would not provide the direct benefit I was seeking.
